When to book your Kansas City maternity session
Kansas City, we're coming home!
I’m here to take the stress out of photos and turn your fleeting moments into forever memories.
From styling to artwork, I take care of every detail—so you can focus on what matters most: loving on your babies while I preserve your family’s legacy with timeless, heartfelt imagery.
There are few seasons in life as tender as the first weeks with your baby.
The way they curl into your chest.
The tiny stretches.
The quiet weight of them asleep on you.
And somewhere between night feeds and trying to remember what day it is, you think:
I don’t want to forget this.
If you’re researching Kansas City newborn photography and wondering where to start, this guide will walk you through everything— from when to book to what to wear— so you can feel calm, informed, and completely taken care of.
Because newborn photos should feel peaceful. Not like another task on your list.

When families search for Kansas City newborn photography, they’re often unsure what the experience will actually feel like.
Will the baby be posed in baskets?
Will the house need to be spotless?
Will it feel stressful?
Is it safe?
Lifestyle newborn photography is centered on connection over perfection.
I don’t use heavy props or complicated posing. Your baby stays in natural, supported positions— usually in your arms, resting on your shoulder, or nestled close against you. The focus isn’t on creating a perfectly styled scene. It’s on preserving the way this season truly feels.
The way your baby fits against your chest.
The way siblings lean in curiously.
The way you look at your child when you think no one notices.
Most of my newborn sessions take place in your home, using natural light and the spaces where your story is unfolding. You don’t have to pack a diaper bag. You don’t have to load everyone into the car. You don’t have to worry about traffic on Ward Parkway with a three-day-old.
Everything unfolds slowly and naturally in your own space.
And no— your home does not need to be spotless. It simply needs to hold your story.
Some families prefer a studio setting or an outdoor location during the warmer months. There’s beauty in those options, too. (I’ll be sharing a full comparison of in-home vs. studio vs. outdoor newborn photography soon.)
And if you’re quietly wondering, “But what if my toddler refuses to cooperate?” or “My husband hates taking photos?” — you are not alone.
Toddlers don’t need to sit still for lifestyle newborn photography. Movement, curiosity, even a little chaos — that’s part of the story. I gently guide siblings in short, natural moments so no one feels forced.
And most husbands walk into a session hesitant… and leave saying, “That was easier than I expected.”
Newborn sessions are designed to feel relaxed — not performative.

The ideal time to book your newborn session is during your second trimester. Because I photograph a limited number of newborn sessions each month, booking during pregnancy ensures I can leave space around your due date without overbooking my calendar. Once those spots are filled, I’m unable to take on additional newborn sessions for that month.
Because newborns rarely arrive exactly on their due date, I don’t schedule sessions by fixed appointments. When you book, I reserve space around your due date— not a single calendar slot. Once your baby arrives, you simply reach out, and we choose the best day based on how you’re feeling and how your baby is doing.
If your baby comes early, we adjust.
If you need extra recovery time after delivery, we adjust.
If there’s a NICU stay, we wait until you’re home and ready.
I intentionally leave flexibility in my calendar because these first weeks should never feel rushed or pressured.

Most newborn sessions take place between 7–21 days old.
During this time:
But here’s something important:
Lifestyle newborn photography still works beautifully beyond the two-week window.
If your baby is 5 weeks old, we simply lean into connection.
If your baby is 8 weeks old, we embrace eye contact and expression.
There is no expiration date on documenting your child.
(You’ll find a full breakdown of newborn timing in an upcoming post.)

Most of my newborn sessions last about 1.5–2 hours.
That doesn’t mean I’m photographing the entire time.
It means we allow space for:
Nothing is rushed.
There is no performance required.
Your only job is to hold your baby.
For many mothers, this is the most stressful part of booking newborn photography.
You’ve just had a baby.
Your body feels different.
You’re not sleeping.
And now you’re supposed to coordinate outfits for everyone?
You don’t have to.
While soft textures and neutral tones photograph beautifully— creams, muted greens, warm whites, soft blues— the most important thing is that you feel comfortable and beautiful.
And you shouldn’t have to figure that out alone.
Every newborn session I photograph includes personalized styling guidance. I help you choose pieces that complement your home, photograph softly in natural light, and feel effortless on your body— especially in those early postpartum weeks.
You won’t be scrolling for hours wondering what works.
You won’t be guessing at color palettes.
You won’t be ordering five dresses hoping one fits.
Your baby doesn’t need elaborate outfits. A simple swaddle or neutral onesie is perfect. The focus is always on connection— not clothing.
Styling should feel supportive, not stressful.
That’s part of the experience I create.
You’ll find a detailed newborn style guide coming soon, but in the meantime you can find some of my favorite wardrobe picks for moms, dads, and kids.

Yes— when approached thoughtfully.
Lifestyle newborn photography keeps your baby in natural, supported positions.
I never place babies in unsafe poses.
I never rush.
I never prioritize a photograph over comfort.
If your baby needs to eat every 20 minutes, we pause.
If your toddler needs to run a lap around the kitchen island, we adjust.
Safety and calm always come first.
Anyone can take a picture.
But newborn photography is about more than clicking a shutter.
It’s about:
When families invest in Kansas City newborn photography, they’re choosing to preserve a season that never returns.
And one day, your child will look at those photographs and see the way you held them.
The way you looked at them.
The way you loved them first.
That is the legacy.

If you’re looking for a Kansas City newborn photographer who provides a calm, guided, full-service experience— I would be honored to document this season for you.
From planning to wardrobe to designing heirloom artwork, I handle the details so you can focus on your baby. Because these early days pass quietly— and quickly.
