Tips from a Kansas City Family Photographer for a Joyful First Birthday Photoshoot
Your baby’s first birthday— can you believe it?
Those tiny fingers you once counted in the hospital have already clutched favorite toys, smeared first bites of banana, and reached for you in the sweetest ways. This season is fleeting, and your baby is changing by the day. That’s why a first birthday session is so much more than a photo op—it’s a chance to pause and celebrate all the growth, love, and magic that’s unfolded this past year.
As a Kansas City family photographer, my goal is to make your session effortless and meaningful. From wardrobe styling to hair and makeup to custom heirloom artwork, I take care of every detail—so you can soak in this milestone and walk away with images that honor your journey.
Here are a few ways to make sure your session feels joyful, relaxed, and full of connection.
1. Choose a time when your baby is happiest
Every baby is different, but post-nap and post-snack is usually a sweet spot! A well-rested, well-fed little one is more likely to be content and engaged during your session. Pack easy snacks just in case—more on that below.
2. Share your baby’s favorite smiles
Whether it’s a silly sound from dad or a song that always gets them bouncing, let me know what makes your baby light up! These little tricks can help bring out their natural joy and personality on camera.
3. Keep it simple for the grownups
Neutral or bare nails for moms, and no phones, keys, or Apple Watches for dads—trust me, it makes a difference! Minimal distractions help the focus stay on your family’s connection.
4. Have a backup plan
If your little one needs some encouragement, a favorite song or show cued up on your phone can work wonders. (This trick has saved many a session—including ones with my own daughter!)
1. Something sentimental
A lovey, a book, a special quilt— if it’s part of your story, it’s welcome in the frame. We can photograph it subtly, beautifully, and in a way that honors this season.
2. Small snacks
Think puffs, Cheerios, or mini marshmallows—tiny, non-messy, and easy to hide or edit out. Save anything sticky or crumbly for after the session!
3. The essentials
Wipes are a must, especially if we’re including a cake smash. And if you’re borrowing from my studio wardrobe or going all in with cake, a change of clothes is a great idea.
1. Keep the cake simple
A 6” vanilla cake or cupcake is perfect. Skip the bright frosting— red can look messy, and chocolate can resemble dirt. I always recommend white or pastel icing for a clean, timeless look. Whole Foods often has great options, like this Berry Chantilly Cake, ready to go and HyVee can quickly prepare a simple, white cake that is beautiful and delicious for $16! However, if you love to support local– McLain’s is always my go-to source!
2. Be ready to jump in
Not all babies dive in right away— sometimes they need a little help! Don’t be afraid to guide them or join in. These shared moments make for some of the most heartfelt images.
3. Don’t forget the cleanup
Wipes and a plastic bag for cake-covered clothes make post-session cleanup a breeze.
The truth is— this session isn’t just about celebrating your baby’s first year. It’s about celebrating you, too.
You’ve spent the past twelve months loving, nurturing, and showing up again and again. Let’s document it in a way that feels effortless and unforgettable— with beautiful images and heirloom artwork that lasts long after the smash cake is gone.
